Why Custom Leather?

In this world of supply and demand, America has unfortunately drifted away from offering quality handmade goods made by American artisans to importing mass produced goods made from countries like China and Tailand. The custom leather products offered by E.J. Leather are 100% American made. These products are hand crafted and sewn, no machines used, and designed for function and durability. There is no fancy carving or burning done on the quality leather in an effort to preserve the traditional look.

Leather and Guns

When I was a kid, there were so many different things that interested me. G.I. Joe, matchbox cars, and toy guns. As I got older I learned that there was a wonderful world of guns but I was not able to explore this world because my mother did not like guns and she had some very good reasons. This point in my life, (young adolescence), was when i started to become interested in all things Native American. I would make arrows with rock points and turkey feathers. I had and wore a pair of knee high moccasins, but the one thing that really interested me the most was the buck skin clothing. When I was in my teenage years, my parents split and then the door to the gun world was opened. My father introduced me to hand guns of all types from .22 Derringers to .44 Bull dog. My very first gun was a crosmen air rifle and my first real gun was a .50 cal. muzzle loader that I got as a kit and finished all by my self. When i was in college i purchased another rifle, a Winchester ranger .30-.30. My love for guns didn't really take off till we moved back to N.Y. from California when I was a Navy Recruiter.
When we moved back to the house I grew up in after being honorably discharged from the Navy was when things went from good to great. I applied for and received my pistol permit and started my collection. I started with the Springfield XD .40 cal. sub compact. I was fun but for some reason I always shot to the two o'clock position. Since that first pistol I have traded and bought a few more and my collection now consists of the following guns: Springfield XD .40SW cal. Tactical, Taurus PT1911 .45ACP, Browning Hi-Power 9mm, Colt Defender Series 90 1911 .45ACP, Walther P22 .22LR, Beretta Jet Fire .25 cal., EAA Bounty Hunter Single action .22LR, New England Fire Arms 45-70 single shot rifle (Killed its first deer this past hunting season), Hawking .50 cal., Remington 597 .22LR, Remington 870 Express Magnum 12GA, N.E. Fire Arms Pardner 12GA, and last but not least by favorite rifle Stag Arms M8 AR-15 in 5.56 or .223. Guns are a passion and a hobby that I love very much.
With guns, particularly hand guns, comes leather and the hobby for which this blog was designed. I started off by getting some basic tools and some tooling leather off of eBay. For Christmas I got a leather crafts kit from my in laws and it  has grown to a large tackle box and a cabinet of all kinds of tools and accessories. I have also got a large supply of leather from a neighbor who was planning on throwing it all away or having it cut up and made into leather carpets. It has become such a hobby and love for the craft that I am also tanning my own deer hides, which are the liners of my gun holsters because they help protect the guns finish and are better then suede because deer doesn't hold alot of dirt which can act as sand paper against your favorite carry pistol.
The reason I got into leather in the first place was knives. I had a few that I had made and needed something to put them in. As can be seen from the few pics and more to come, I have gotten much better and refined the process. I started with just two thin pieces of leather sewn together in an very basic and elementary style holster the was neither functional nor desirable. As we progress down the road of leather and guns, I can not wait to share more of my designs and hope to promote business for fellow gun lovers.
